The Buddhist Retreat Center in Szklarska Poręba is one of several dozen meditation centers of the Buddhist Association of the Diamond Way of the Karma Kagyu Lineage operating in Poland. Our teacher is Lama Ole Nydahl.
In late 60s of 20th century Hannah and her husband Ole met 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje during their trip to India and Nepal. He was the greatest master of meditation of his times and they became his students. After a few years, Karmapa asked them to spread Diamond Way teachings around the world and to found centres. First appeared centres in Europe, Americas, Russia than in Australia, New Zeeland, South Africa, Japan, Hong-Kong, Nepal and Israel. Since then they founded over 700 lay centres including a several dozens in Poland. Currently, they are all under the spiritual care of the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje, the head of the Karma Kagyu lineage.
The Karma Kagyu lineage is one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Every transmission, method, meditation and knowledge in this lineage comes directly or indirectly from the Buddha. After his death, the highest teachings were transmitted in India by realized masters such as Tilopa, Naropa and Maitripa. Afterwards, they were translated and brought to Tibet by Marpa and developed thanks to the activity of Milarepa and Gampopa. Since the 12th century, the responsibility for transmitting the teachings has rested with the Karmapas line.
Diamond Way Centres are places where lay practitioners are gathering for common meditations, individual practice, joining lectures and meditation courses. Lectures, as well as meditation courses, are guided in mother languages and in the style which is suitable for our culture. They are for the beginners as well as more experienced people.
Our centers are not institutions detached from life. These are places founded and run by friends that function without unnecessary hierarchy and are based on friendship and idealism. We meet here to draw from the timeless wisdom of Buddha's teachings, meditate, exchange experiences, share development and take an active part in common activities.
Buddhism is the teachings about the nature of the mind derived from the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, who lived and taught over 2,5 thous. years ago in northern India.
The goal of Buddhist practice is to achieve complete realization of the mind's potential and experience lasting happiness - enlightenment. Everyone can realize them, which is why Buddhism is called the religion of experience. There are many traditions, schools and styles of practice in Buddhism. The Diamond Way of the Karma Kagyu lineage is the most exciting area of Buddhist teachings, perfect for independent, joyful people.
The basis for buddhist practice lays in the three pillars: KNOWLEDGE, MEDITATION, and ACTION. While taking part in lectures, reading book we get to know Buddhist teachings, but thanks to meditation we can transform the view from the teachings into our practical experience. The experience we can use in our daily life, maintaining the highest view and using every situation for our development
„ Meditations have only one goal - complete liberation of the mind. It does not mean deep, spiritual reflection, nor does it mean avoiding thoughts or clinging to pleasant states of mind. Instead, they allow us to rest in the moment without effort – they allow us to see what is really happening.”
Lama Ole Nydahl
People who would like to learn the basics of Buddhism and take part in a common meditation are invited every Friday 7:30 p.m.
Please contact us in advance.
The meditation lasts about half an hour, is free and conducted in Polish. It does not require knowledge of complex texts or wearing special clothes.
We organize meditation courses several times a year. It is possible to stay at the center and take part in open or closed retreats for all Lama Ole Nydahl's students who practice Diamond Way Buddhism.

The origins of the center in Szklarska Poręba date back to the 1980s. That's when the Zen Community bought a piece of land with a ruined cottage in the middle of nowhere.
These were interesting times when building materials were not bought but "organized". Transport also happened in strange circumstances with the help of the PRL's automotive wonders. At the right moment, and at the right time, variuos people appeared who... once dug a septic tank, laid a road, or laid an electric and telecommunications cable another time.
And this is how the Zen Rinzai Meditation Center was created, which was the place of practice of this school in the Karkonosze Mountains until the beginning of 2024. The center also served as an integration function for the Buddhist community of the Western Sudetes. Every spring, the hosts, Ania and Chizo, invited representatives of individual schools to their place to integrate the community. Such an invitation was also sent to BOM Jelenia Góra in 2019.
This was the beginning of a relationship that was developing, growing and strengthening over the next four years, and in 2022 has resulted in the proposal to transfer the forty-year-old achievements of the ZEN Community into the hands of new hosts - yogis of the Diamond Way of the Karma Kagyu Lineage. After many meetings, and conversations, in February 2023, the idea of joining the pearl, in the form of the Center in Szklarska Poręba, to the crown of Polish retreat centers, received Lama Ole's blessing and everything happened quickly since then.
On March 15, 2023, in Jelenia Góra, in the presence of a notary, a formal transfer of ownership rights from the Rinzai Zen Buddhism Community "Bez Bram" to the Diamond Way Buddhist Association of the Karma Kagyu Lineage took place. And on April 1, 2024, new hosts and caretakers of the center moved in.
The center is located at the junction of the borders of Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany, in the south-western part of Poland. Despite the tourist character of Szklarska Poręba and the proximity of urban infrastructure, the location of the Center favors meditation and silence. The area of the Center is 1.08 ha, in the buffer zone of the Jizera Mountains forest, with a beautiful view of the Karkonosze Mountains.
The operation of the Center is made possible through the dedication and generosity of many individuals.
The Center in Szklarska Poręba did not require construction or rebuilding from ruins. However, it does need renovations to refresh and slightly reorganize the space.
The beautiful area surrounding the Center provides the opportunity for continuous work, building, and deepening connections with people and the place
All activities and the operation of the Center are entirely funded by membership fees and donations, whether direct or received during lectures, courses, and other events.
Anyone who wishes to contribute to the development of this place can join both practically and financially … and then things will happen here :)

Funkcjonowanie Ośrodka możliwe jest dzięki
zaangażowaniu
i szczodrości wielu osób.
Ośrodek, w Szklarskiej Porębie, nie wymagał budowy, ani podnoszenia z gruzów. Potrzebuje natomiast remontów, które odświeżą i trochę przeorganizują przestrzeń.
Piękny teren wokół Ośrodka stwarza możliwość nieustannej pracy, budowania i pogłębiania związków z ludźmi i z miejscem :)
Kilka razy w roku organizujemy kursy medytacyjne. Dla uczniów Lamy Ole Nydahla, praktykujących Buddyzm Diamentowej Drogi istnieje możliwość pobytu w ośrodku i odbycia otwartych lub zamkniętych odosobnień.
Zabierz karimatę, śpiwór, ręcznik, obuwie domowe i rzeczy osobiste.
Przygotowujemy wspólnie posiłki dla wszystkich mieszkańców i gości. W związku z tym prosimy o nie przywożenie własnego jedzenia.
Pobyt w ośrodku związany jest z włączeniem się do prac domowych.
